Using Shavings as Bedding in Horse Stalls
Ordering Bulk Shavings
Buying shavings in bulk for horse stalls is the most economical and efficient option. Rather than buying bagged shavings at your local farm and feed store, we can deliver loose shavings to your farm and even unload directly into most shaving bins and other storage areas.
Building Your Shavings Bin
The ideal dimensions for a shavings bin or barn is 12′ wide by 24′ long by 14′ tall.
Building your storage space with these dimensions in mind will ensure our delivery trucks will fit for easy unloading.
A 6 unit load will take up a space that’s 10′ wide, 10′ long and 12′ high. Keep in mind that the larger the space, the more units of shavings you can store. There are several benefits to having a large storage area; one of the best benefits is pricing. The cost per unit usually goes down with larger orders (6 units is the the most economical load).
Deciding How Many Units Are Needed
One of the most commonly asked questions is how many units are needed to bed the stalls in a stable.
It’s a bit tricky converting cubic feet into units and we’re always happy to help with estimating the load needed so don’t hesitate to ask us.
Generally, you can multiply width by length by depth to calculate the cubic feet required.
For example, the standard horse stall is 12′ wide by 12′ long and if you want to have a layer of shavings that’s 3″ (0.25 feet) deep then:
12x12x0.25 = 36 cubic feet
Then you can multiply the space of the stall by the number of stalls to determine how much is needed to bed all the stalls.
36 cubic feet x 30 stalls = 1,080 cubic feet
1 unit is 200 cubic feet so 1,080 cubic feet is nearly 5.5 units.
The next thing to consider is how long the load will last. Many of our customers get regular weekly deliveries because they use the entire load each week. This depends on personal preference and whether you clean stalls by removing a bit of shavings at a time or completely strip the stalls each day, every other day, each week, etc.
